Best Vegan Mattresses (2026): Zero Sheep Were Counted

By Captain Vegan · Updated November 5, 2026 · 6 picks compared

Wool loves to hide in mattresses: in the fire barrier, the quilted top, the fancy “natural” cover. We kept only beds whose published materials show no wool, silk or other animal fibers, then let Sleep Foundation’s lab and Mattress Clarity’s reviewers set the order.

How We Picked

  • No wool, silk, cashmere or other animal fibers. We checked each brand’s own materials pages for the cover and the fire barrier, which is where wool usually hides.
  • A third-party vegan seal counts as a plus. PETA features one pick here, the PlushBeds Natural Bliss, but we couldn’t confirm a vegan logo on any of the six, so we don’t claim one.
  • Rankings lean on Sleep Foundation’s lab scores and Mattress Clarity’s picks.
  • Every pick links to a queen sold on Amazon by Amazon or by the brand’s own company.
  • We checked CPSC recalls for every brand. We never tested these mattresses ourselves: every finding belongs to the outlet we link.

The Reviews

#1
Nectar Classic 12″ Memory Foam
Best overall

Nectar Classic 12″ Memory Foam

The crowd favorite that happens to skip the sheep. Mattress Clarity named the Nectar Classic its best mattress overall in its October 30, 2026 update, and its best mattress on Amazon. Sleep Foundation calls it its top affordable memory foam pick, with an 8.7/10 lab score and 8.5s for motion isolation and pressure relief. Nectar says its covers are a polyester and polyethylene blend and its fire barriers are rayon, not wool.

  • 12-inch all-foam
  • poly-blend cover
  • rayon fire barrier
  • 365-night trial (Amazon listing)

Why it made the list

  • Top pick at Mattress Clarity, overall and on Amazon
  • Strong motion isolation: a restless partner stays their own problem
  • Amazon listing includes a 365-night trial

Watch out for

  • Sleep Foundation scored temperature control just 6.5/10
  • Not supportive enough for most stomach sleepers, say both outlets
  • Nectar calls it firm; the reviewers call it medium firm
  • Type: All-foam memory foam, 12 in
  • Feel: Medium firm, 6/10 (Sleep Foundation)
  • Cover: Polyester and polyethylene blend (Nectar)
  • Fire barrier: Rayon or rayon-polyester blend; fiberglass-free (Nectar)

#2
Helix Midnight Luxe
Best hybrid

Helix Midnight Luxe

Coils, a pillow top, and the highest scores on this page. Sleep Foundation ranked the Midnight Luxe first of the 50 mattresses in a box its lab tested, at 9.7/10, with 9.5s for pressure relief and edge support. Mattress Clarity calls it the most comfortable mattress it has tested and gave it 4/5 or better for edge support, cooling and pressure relief. Helix says Luxe covers are TENCEL or its GlacioTex cooling fabric, over a rayon fire barrier made from cellulose.

  • pocketed coils + foam
  • TENCEL or GlacioTex cover
  • rayon fire barrier
  • 365-night trial (Amazon listing)

Why it made the list

  • Sleep Foundation’s top-scoring mattress in a box
  • Sturdy edges: 9.5/10 for edge support
  • Amazon listing includes a 365-night trial and a limited lifetime warranty

Watch out for

  • Costs more than the all-foam picks
  • Mattress Clarity scored its responsiveness below average
  • Sleep Foundation says stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers may want something firmer
  • Type: Hybrid: foam layers over up to 1,000 wrapped coils (Helix)
  • Feel: Medium firm, 6/10 (Sleep Foundation)
  • Cover: TENCEL or GlacioTex cooling fabric (Helix)
  • Fire barrier: Rayon from regenerated cellulose; fiberglass-free (Helix)
  • Sold by: 3Z Brands, Helix’s parent company

#3
Tuft & Needle Original
Best memory foam alternative

Tuft & Needle Original

For people who hate the slow sink of memory foam. Sleep Foundation named the T&N Original its best foam mattress in a box, scored it 8.6/10, and rates the current version a medium 5 out of 10. Its testers credited the gel and graphite in the foam for a 7.5/10 temperature score. Mattress Clarity lists it as the best memory foam alternative on Amazon. T&N says its fire barrier is rayon treated with ammonium phosphate. It doesn’t publish a full fiber list for the cover, which reviewers describe as a polyester blend.

  • gel + graphite foam
  • rayon fire barrier
  • 100-night trial (Amazon listing)
  • 10-year limited warranty

Why it made the list

  • 7.5/10 for temperature control, helped by gel and graphite (Sleep Foundation)
  • Second-cheapest pick here at our check
  • Sleep Foundation praised its motion isolation

Watch out for

  • Edge support scored 6.5/10 (Sleep Foundation)
  • Most stomach sleepers, and back sleepers over 230 pounds, found it too soft
  • Sleep Foundation expects a 5- to 6-year lifespan
  • Type: All-foam (T&N Adaptive, Flex and Release foams)
  • Feel: Medium, 5/10 (Sleep Foundation, current version)
  • Fire barrier: Rayon treated with ammonium phosphate; no fiberglass (T&N)
  • Amazon name: Sold as “Original Legacy”
  • Sold by: Amazon.com

#4
PlushBeds Natural Bliss 10″ (Medium)
Best natural latex

PlushBeds Natural Bliss 10″ (Medium)

The one for people who want no foam at all. PETA features the Natural Bliss in its vegan mattress roundup, noting it’s wool-free with an organic cotton cover. Sleep Foundation gave it 8.8/10, with a 9/10 for durability, a 10-plus-year life expectancy, and an 8/10 for temperature control. PlushBeds says it’s made with no animal products: three 2-inch latex layers over a 4-inch organic latex core. The catch: it’s by far the priciest pick here.

  • organic latex core
  • organic cotton cover
  • wool-free
  • made in California

Why it made the list

  • Featured by PETA as a vegan, wool-free mattress
  • Highest durability score on this page (9/10, Sleep Foundation)
  • 8/10 for temperature control (Sleep Foundation)

Watch out for

  • The priciest pick here, by a lot
  • Motion isolation scored 6.5/10
  • Sleep Foundation notes a 30-night break-in and a return fee during that window
  • Type: All-latex, 10 in
  • Layers: Three 2-in latex layers over a 4-in GOLS organic latex core (PlushBeds)
  • Cover: GOTS organic cotton (PlushBeds)
  • Feel: Medium; PlushBeds rates it 7/10 on its own scale
  • Organic certificate: Posted GOLS certificate valid until Jan 11, 2026
  • Sold by: The Natural Latex Company (PlushBeds)

#5
Leesa Original 10″
Best cooling foam

Leesa Original 10″

A cool customer, literally. Mattress Clarity named the Leesa Original its best cooling mattress on Amazon, with a perfect cooling score and 4 or better in every key test. Sleep Foundation rates it a medium 5/10, scored it 8.2 overall, and found it suited side sleepers of every weight best. Leesa’s materials page lists rayon in the fire barrier and polyester blends in its foam beds’ covers. One warning: the Leesa Legend Hybrid’s cover is 12% merino wool, so this exact model matters.

  • 10-inch all-foam
  • rayon fire barrier
  • GREENGUARD Gold
  • CertiPUR-US foams

Why it made the list

  • Perfect cooling score at Mattress Clarity
  • Comfortable for side sleepers of all weights (Sleep Foundation)
  • Leesa says it donates one mattress for every ten sold

Watch out for

  • Most stomach sleepers on Sleep Foundation’s team found it too plush
  • Edge support scored 6/10 (Sleep Foundation)

  • Certifications: GREENGUARD Gold; CertiPUR-US foams (Leesa)

#6
Zinus Green Tea 12″ Memory Foam
Best budget

Zinus Green Tea 12″ Memory Foam

The cheapest bed here, by a mile. Sleep Foundation lists the Zinus Green Tea among its best mattresses on Amazon. Its review scored it 7.5/10 overall and 8/10 for both motion isolation and pressure relief, but flagged heat retention and a strong smell out of the box. The Amazon listing says the fire barrier is carbon rayon with no fiberglass, and NapLab lists the cover as 100% polyester. Fine for a guest room, a first apartment, or a budget that’s already gone to protein powder.

  • polyester knit cover
  • carbon rayon fire barrier
  • 10-year limited warranty
  • cheapest pick here

Why it made the list

  • Cheapest pick here by a wide margin
  • 8/10 for motion isolation (Sleep Foundation)
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon

Watch out for

  • Sleep Foundation found it tends to trap heat
  • Durability scored 6/10; expect about 5 to 6 years
  • Strong new-mattress smell at first, per Sleep Foundation
  • Type: All-foam memory foam, 12 in
  • Feel: Medium firm, 6/10 (Sleep Foundation)
  • Cover: Polyester knit (NapLab); OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (Zinus)
  • Fire barrier: Carbon rayon; fiberglass-free (Zinus)
  • Warranty: 10-year limited (Amazon listing)

What Actually Matters

The fire barrier. Every mattress sold in the US has to pass a federal open-flame test, and wool is one way to pass it. Our picks use rayon instead: Nectar, Helix, Leesa and Tuft & Needle all say so, and Zinus lists carbon rayon. PlushBeds says the Natural Bliss contains no animal products at all.

Same brand, different bed. PlushBeds’ Botanical Bliss uses wool; only the Natural Bliss is wool-free. Leesa’s Legend Hybrid has merino in its cover. Match the exact model name before you buy.

Labels, decoded. CertiPUR-US covers foam content and emissions. GREENGUARD Gold covers emissions. GOLS certifies organic latex and GOTS certifies organic textiles, and GOTS can certify organic wool. None of them means vegan. PETA-Approved Vegan does: per PETA, Avocado’s vegan mattress carries that logo, but we couldn’t find it sold on Amazon.

Recalls. In April 2022 CPSC announced a recall of about 700 Nectar Premier mattresses made on two dates in September 2021 and sold only at NectarSleep.com, because they failed the federal flammability standard. It didn’t involve the Nectar Classic. Separately, in October 2025 CPSC announced a recall of about 5,340 Avenco and Novilla mattresses, sold on Amazon and the brands’ sites from January to April 2025, for violating the same standard. If a no-name bargain looks too cheap to be true, search CPSC first.

Who Didn’t Make the Cut

Avocado’s vegan mattress has the strongest vegan credentials on paper, but we couldn’t find it on Amazon. Naturepedic makes wool-free EOS versions only by request. Awara and Birch use wool. We couldn’t find a current materials statement covering the cover and fire barrier for Casper, Purple or Brooklyn Bedding’s CopperFlex, and retailer copy describes DreamCloud’s quilted top as a cashmere blend, so those sat this one out.

Quick Questions

What makes a mattress not vegan?

Usually wool, often in the fire barrier or the quilted top. Fancier covers can add silk, cashmere or horsehair. Foam, latex, steel coils, cotton, polyester and rayon are all animal-free materials.

Are any of these certified vegan?

Not that we could confirm. PETA features the PlushBeds Natural Bliss in its vegan mattress roundup, but we couldn’t confirm a PETA-Approved Vegan logo or other vegan certificate on any pick. The other five rely on the brands’ own materials lists.

What about the glue?

None of the foam brands here publishes a statement about adhesives. PlushBeds says the Natural Bliss has no animal products. If glue is a dealbreaker for you, ask the brand before you buy.

Is a GOTS or GOLS label a vegan label?

No. GOLS certifies organic latex and GOTS certifies organic textiles, and GOTS covers organic wool too. Leesa, for example, lists GOTS-certified New Zealand wool among its materials. PlushBeds’ posted GOLS certificate was valid until January 11, 2026, and we couldn’t find a newer one, so ask PlushBeds if the organic label matters to you.

How firm are they?

On Sleep Foundation’s 10-point scale: Nectar Classic, Helix Midnight Luxe and Zinus Green Tea are medium firm (6); Tuft & Needle Original and Leesa Original are medium (5). The Natural Bliss comes in several firmness levels; the one we link is Medium.
