What’s in the Tub
Momentous calls it a pea and rice blend, and the label lists PURIS pea protein and organic brown rice protein. The brand’s own certificate of analysis for Vanilla Spice shows the real ratio: 24.9 g of pea protein to 1.03 g of brown rice protein. So it’s a pea shake with a rice cameo.
A serving is 1 scoop (about 32 g) with 20 g of protein on the label; six brand lab reports measured 20.1 to 22 g. Vanilla Spice has 290 mg of sodium per its lab report, and the brand says each serving has only 2 g of organic cane sugar. The Vanilla Spice calorie count is unconfirmed; Healthline lists the chocolate at about 130 calories.
Vanilla Spice gets its personality from cinnamon, ginger, anise and black pepper, plus natural flavors, salt, cane sugar and stevia. Momentous says the powder has no gums, fillers or stabilizers. The pea protein isn’t organic; the brown rice protein is. Other current flavors are Chocolate, Vanilla and Cappuccino. Think of it as a chai latte that joined a gym.
Taste and Texture: What Reviewers Say
Healthline named Momentous its best vegan protein powder in its 2026 roundup, and its tester tried the current Vanilla Spice. Tester Alice Porter-McLaughlin said the vanilla wasn’t too artificial or strong, called the texture “a little chalky” in water or milk, and noted it dissolved well in plain liquid without a blender. Her favorite uses were smoothies and oats. Healthline gave no numeric taste score.
BarBend gave Momentous chocolate 5 out of 5 for taste and 5 out of 5 for solubility, while noting an earthy note and a texture that was “very fine, but definitely sand-like.” The catch: the flavors and specs BarBend listed match the older Essential line, so that review may cover the previous formula. No review from Garage Gym Reviews or VegFAQs turned up.
Because Healthline published no number and BarBend’s score may describe the old powder, our taste score uses the neutral rule. Captain Vegan’s opinion: cinnamon and ginger make clever cover for a pea-heavy blend.
Safety and Testing
First, the headline you may have seen. In its October 2025 report, Consumer Reports tested Momentous 100% Plant Protein, Chocolate, bought between November 2024 and January 2025, and measured lead at 476% of CR’s level of concern per serving. CR suggested no more than one and a half servings a week. Momentous says that was its previous-generation formula, no longer sold since March 2025. CR has not tested the current formula.
Momentous says the new version uses new US and Canadian pea suppliers and a new pea-to-rice ratio, and it backs that up with something rare: lab reports for 88 batches, posted on its website. In six of those reports, run by labs the brand hired, the October 2025 Vanilla Spice lot showed 0.36 mcg of lead per scoop. For scale, CR’s daily level of concern is 0.5 mcg. But all three 2026 chocolate lots came in at 0.72 to 0.80 mcg, above the 0.54 mcg Momentous itself quoted for chocolate. Averaged across the six lots, lead lands at 119% of CR’s daily level. Lots of homework shown; not every grade is an A.
Vanilla Spice, Vanilla and Cappuccino are on NSF’s Certified for Sport list (checked November 3, 2026); the current chocolate isn’t listed under the new name, so its status is unclear. Two 2021 Prop 65 notices over lead, which are allegations rather than findings, named older Momentous products, and both were withdrawn in September 2021. No 2025 or 2026 notice and no recalls turned up.
How It Scored
Protein: 16/25. 20 g per serving earns 6.7 of 10 points for grams. Our density math uses the 130 calories Healthline lists for chocolate, since the Vanilla Spice count is unconfirmed; that puts protein at about 62% of calories, worth 4.3 of 10. The pea-rice blend earns the full 5 for amino-acid support.
Value: 13/25. Only Ritual costs more per 20 g of protein in our top 10. Premium paperwork, premium price.
Purity: 17/25. From our starting 15, NSF Certified for Sport adds 4 and published batch numbers add 2. The brand’s own lots, averaging 119% of CR’s daily lead level, subtract 2, and CR’s 476% result for the discontinued previous formula subtracts 2 more.
Taste: 15/25. With no usable independent score for the current formula, taste and mixing both get our neutral 60%: 12 of 20 and 3 of 5. See how we rank for the full formula.
How It Compares
Ritual Essential Protein (#7, 63/100) is the other top-10 powder that publishes per-batch heavy-metal numbers. It has the highest taste score in our top 10 plus Clean Label Project and NSF Contents certifications, but Consumer Reports measured its chocolate at 107% of CR’s lead level of concern (January 2026), and it’s the priciest per gram.
Vega Protein + Recovery (#2, 72/100) shares the NSF Certified for Sport badge and packs 30 g in a 41 g scoop for less per gram of protein, though Consumer Reports measured its chocolate at 185% of CR’s lead level of concern (October 2025) and flagged cadmium.
Naked Pea (#1, 84/100) is the budget-minded athlete’s pick: Informed Choice certified, 27 g per 2-scoop serving and the cheapest protein in our top 10. It doesn’t publish lead numbers, though, and that’s exactly what Momentous does best. More options are on our athletes page.
