What’s in the Pouch
Ritual sells this as Essential Protein Daily Shake 18+, and our Amazon link points to the Vanilla in a 1 lb pouch with 15 servings. Grab a measuring cup: a serving is 1/3 cup, about 31 grams, not a scoop. Each serving has 120 calories, 20 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fiber, 0 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fat and 290 mg of sodium.
The protein is a single source: organic pea protein from supplier PURIS, made from yellow peas grown in the USA. Ritual adds 400 mg of L-methionine, the amino acid pea protein runs short on, and lists 8 grams of essential amino acids and 4 grams of BCAAs per serving, though it doesn’t break out leucine. Sweetness comes from Reb M, a stevia extract, and monk fruit, while coconut MCT oil, xanthan gum and sunflower lecithin handle the texture.
Two label quirks. Despite the organic pea, Ritual says the shake isn’t organic overall, because it mixes organic and non-organic ingredients. And one line on Ritual’s page says it’s made without stevia, while another calls Reb M a stevia leaf extract; we go by the ingredient list. Older reviews list 115 calories, apparently from an earlier label. Captain Vegan’s take: a one-protein shake with a tidy entourage.
Taste and Texture: What Reviewers Say
This is Ritual’s best event. BarBend’s reviewer scored the Vanilla 4.5 of 5 for taste and 5 of 5 for solubility, saying it “didn’t taste like the stereotypical earthiness of other plant-based powders.” A second BarBend reviewer also gave solubility 5 of 5. (BarBend’s Best Organic award is odd, since Ritual says it isn’t organic.)
Garage Gym Reviews’ tester rated taste 4 of 5 and solubility 5 of 5, praising its “excellent consistency” for a plant-based protein, then noted a slight chalky aftertaste. Healthline gave it 3.6 of 5 overall, and its tester called it the best mixer of the group. The usual complaints: price, the small 15-serving pouch and that mild aftertaste in water. Captain Vegan’s opinion: the rare pea shake that doesn’t taste like it was picked five minutes ago.
Safety and Testing
Ritual brings more purity paperwork than most. The Clean Label Project lists Essential Protein with its Purity Award (entries dated May 26, 2026), and NSF lists the Daily Shake in Vanilla and Chocolate as NSF Contents Certified, which covers label accuracy and contaminants. Ritual also posts lot results online; its Vanilla lot released Nov 12, 2025 shows lead under 0.02 ppm. The lab isn’t named and only one lot per flavor is shown, so treat that as a brand claim.
Consumer Reports tested the Chocolate flavor in a January 2026 follow-up (a 33-gram serving, from lots bought in November 2025). Lead came in at 107% of CR’s daily level of concern, with a limit of 6½ servings a week, and CR’s headline described the whole group as low in lead. That’s the lowest CR lead result among the powders in our top 10. The Vanilla in our link wasn’t tested.
On the other side of the ledger, the label carries a California Prop 65 lead warning, and a February 2026 Prop 65 notice from Consumer Protection Group alleges lead in the 1 lb Vanilla. That’s an allegation, not a finding, and the state’s page showed no settlement or withdrawal as of Nov 3, 2026. A separate June 2026 notice alleges lead and cadmium in PURIS’s own pea protein powder; Ritual isn’t named. Our research turned up no recalls.
Despite what some older reviews say, Ritual isn’t on the November 2026 NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport or Informed Choice lists.
How It Scored
Ritual scored 63 out of 100 on our formula. Protein quality earned 17 of 25: 6.7 points for 20 grams per serving, 5.3 of 10 for density because 67% of its calories come from protein, and the full 5 for amino-acid support, thanks to the added methionine. Value is the big leak at 7 of 25: measured by what 20 grams of protein cost at the Amazon price on our Nov 3, 2026 scoring date, it’s the most expensive in our top 10.
Purity scored 17 of 25: the 15-point baseline, plus 4 for the Clean Label Project award and NSF Contents certification and 2 for publishing batch metal numbers, minus 2 for CR’s 107% lead result and 2 more for the Prop 65 label warning and open notice. Taste and mixing earned 22 of 25, the best in our top 10: 17 of 20 for taste from BarBend and Garage Gym Reviews, and a perfect 5 of 5 for mixing. Champagne shake, champagne bill.
How It Compares
Naked Pea (No. 1, 84/100) is the other single-source pea powder in our top 10, with 27 grams per serving, Informed Choice certification and the lowest cost per gram in the lineup. It’s unflavored, though, so flavor is your job.
PlantFusion Complete (No. 6, 68/100) matches Ritual’s perfect mixing score for much less per gram, but CR measured more lead in its Creamy Vanilla Bean (140%, Oct 2025). KOS Organic Plant Protein (No. 10, 56/100) posted a similar CR result (112%, Vanilla, Oct 2025) and is USDA Organic, but reviewers rate it far lower for mixing. More smooth operators live on our best-tasting list.
