Best Vegan Omega-3 Supplements (2026): Algae Oil EPA + DHA, Ranked

By Captain Vegan · Updated November 5, 2026 · 5 picks compared

Fish don’t make their own EPA and DHA. They get it from the algae that do. So we skipped the middle-fish, went straight to algae oil, and read every label for the two numbers that matter: EPA and DHA per serving.

How We Picked

  • Vegan on the label: a vegan statement or certification, plus a plant-based softgel or capsule.
  • Independent testing found in the certifier’s own database (IAOS, NSF Contents Certified, NSF Certified for Sport). A logo we can’t find there doesn’t count.
  • EPA + DHA from the Supplement Facts panel, never the “algae oil mg” headline, compared with EFSA’s 250 mg a day reference for adults.
  • Cost per daily serving and per 250 mg of EPA + DHA, from Amazon prices when we checked.
  • Clean record: FDA recalls and warning letters, California Prop 65 notices and lawsuits, with anything relevant in the cons.

The Reviews

Ranked, roasted, and label-checked.

#1
Igennus Pure Essential Vegan Omega-3 with Astaxanthin
Best overall

Igennus Pure & Essential Vegan Omega-3 with Astaxanthin

The only pick with a current IAOS listing, Nutrasource’s certification for algae omega-3s, with tested lots shown. Two softgels give 400 mg DHA and 200 mg EPA, well past EFSA’s 250 mg reference, and it costs less per day than the other certified picks. The shell is pea starch, so the only fish involved is the one you didn’t buy.

  • Brand states vegan; pea-starch softgel
  • IAOS certified (Nutrasource)

Why it made the list

  • IAOS certification you can look up, lot by lot
  • 600 mg EPA + DHA per serving
  • Low cost per daily serving for a certified pick
  • No artificial colours or flavours

Watch out for

  • Carrageenan in the softgel shell
  • Adds 1 mg astaxanthin, in case you only want omega-3
  • We read the UK label; the US bottle may differ slightly
  • Form: Softgel (modified pea starch, glycerol, carrageenan)
  • Per serving: 2 softgels: DHA 400 mg, EPA 200 mg (from 1,344 mg Schizochytrium algal oil); astaxanthin 1 mg
  • Servings: 30 per 60-softgel bottle
  • Other ingredients: Modified pea starch, glycerol, carrageenan; Haematococcus pluvialis oleoresin (astaxanthin source)
  • Sweeteners & flavors: None listed

#2
Bragg Marine Algae Omega-3
Best mini softgels

Bragg Marine Algae Omega-3

NSF lists these exact mini softgels in its contents-certified database, so someone other than Bragg checked that the label matches the bottle. The softgels are small, which is good news if big pills make you gag. One heads-up: the Amazon listing says one softgel does the job, but the label serving is two.

  • Brand states vegan; corn-starch softgel
  • NSF Contents Certified (NSF/ANSI 173)

Why it made the list

  • NSF contents certification on this exact product
  • Mini softgels, easy to swallow
  • No artificial colors or flavors
  • Sold by Bragg on Amazon

Watch out for

  • Lowest EPA + DHA per serving on the list
  • Highest cost per 250 mg of EPA + DHA here
  • Carrageenan and sorbitol in the shell
  • Form: Mini softgel (modified corn starch, glycerin, carrageenan, sorbitol)
  • Per serving: 2 softgels: DHA 300 mg, EPA 150 mg (550 mg total omega-3)
  • Servings: 30 per 60-softgel bottle
  • Other ingredients: Modified corn starch, glycerin, carrageenan, sorbitol, purified water
  • Sweeteners & flavors: No added flavors (sorbitol is part of the shell)

#3
Momentous Vegan Omega-3
Highest dose, no carrageenan

Momentous Vegan Omega-3

The heavyweight: 500 mg EPA plus 500 mg DHA per two capsules, the most on our list. It’s NSF Certified for Sport, with the vegan claim on NSF’s listing, and its hypromellose capsule means no carrageenan. It also costs the most per day, so it’s for people who want the big number and the sport-grade paperwork.

  • Vegan claim on NSF’s listing; hypromellose capsule
  • NSF Certified for Sport

Why it made the list

  • Most EPA + DHA per serving here
  • NSF Certified for Sport, vegan claim included
  • No carrageenan

Watch out for

  • Highest cost per daily serving on the list
  • Amazon listing says refrigerate after opening
  • Contains lemon oil, if you want zero flavorings
  • Form: Capsule (hypromellose)
  • Per serving: 2 capsules: EPA 500 mg, DHA 500 mg (1,000 mg omega-3 from Schizochytrium algal oil)
  • Servings: 30 per 60-capsule bottle
  • Other ingredients: Hypromellose, mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, ascorbyl palmitate, lemon oil, candelilla wax, lipase
  • Sweeteners & flavors: Lemon oil; no sweeteners listed

#4
Natures Way NutraVege Omega-3
Best budget

Nature’s Way NutraVege Omega-3

One softgel gives 300 mg EPA plus 200 mg DHA, at the lowest cost per daily serving of our picks. The catch: we couldn’t find it in any certifier database we checked, so it ranks below the three that are listed. Its brand page text also disagrees with its Supplement Facts panel; we went with the panel.

  • Vegan symbol on label; corn-starch softgel
  • No third-party certification found

Why it made the list

  • Lowest cost per daily serving here
  • One softgel per serving
  • 500 mg EPA + DHA, more EPA than DHA

Watch out for

  • No independent certification found
  • Mint flavor and carrageenan in the softgel
  • Form: Softgel (modified corn starch, glycerin, carrageenan, sorbitol)
  • Per serving: 1 softgel: EPA 300 mg, DHA 200 mg (550 mg omega-3 from 1 g algal oil)
  • Servings: 30
  • Other ingredients: Modified corn starch, glycerin, carrageenan, sorbitol, purified water, natural flavor (fresh mint), rosemary extract, sunflower oil, mixed tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate
  • Sweeteners & flavors: Natural mint flavor

#5
Nordic Naturals Algae Omega
Most EPA + DHA for the money

Nordic Naturals Algae Omega

Per milligram of EPA plus DHA, this was the cheapest bottle on our list when we checked. Read past the Amazon title, though: its “715mg” is total omega-3 for two softgels, and EPA plus DHA is 585 mg. Nordic says it tests its products, but we couldn’t find this one in a certifier database, so it ranks last.

  • Brand states vegan; corn-starch softgel
  • No third-party certification found

Why it made the list

  • Lowest cost per 250 mg of EPA + DHA here
  • 585 mg EPA + DHA per serving
  • Sold by Nordic Naturals on Amazon

Watch out for

  • No certifier listing found
  • A 2023 class action alleges Nordic’s front labels make per-softgel doses look bigger than they are. That’s an allegation; we found no ruling
  • Carrageenan in the softgel
  • Form: Softgel (modified cornstarch, glycerin, carrageenan, sorbitol, carob color)
  • Per serving: 2 softgels: EPA 195 mg, DHA 390 mg (715 mg total omega-3)
  • Servings: 30 per 60-softgel bottle
  • Other ingredients: High-oleic sunflower oil, rosemary extract, mixed tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate; softgel: modified cornstarch, glycerin, carrageenan, sorbitol, water, carob color
  • Sweeteners & flavors: None listed

Why Vegans Look at Algae Oil

Plants give you ALA, the short-chain omega-3 in flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts. EPA and DHA are the long-chain ones. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says your body turns only a little ALA into EPA and DHA (reported rates under 15%), so eating EPA and DHA directly is the only practical way to raise their levels.

Plot twist: fish don’t make EPA and DHA either. The same NIH fact sheet says microalgae make them, and fish collect them as they eat. Algae oil skips the fish. Same fatty acids, nobody gets filleted.

The Vegan Society suggests one or two rich ALA sources every day, like walnuts, chia, ground flaxseed or shelled hemp seeds. It says an algae EPA and DHA supplement isn’t considered essential, but vegans may choose one. If you’re choosing one, read on.

Read EPA + DHA, Not the Big Number

Algae oil labels love a big headline: oil weight, total omega-3, or a two-softgel number printed like it’s one. The number you want is EPA plus DHA in the Supplement Facts panel, with the serving size right above it.

Three examples from this list. Nordic’s Amazon title says 715 mg EPA + DHA, while the label shows 715 mg total omega-3 and 585 mg EPA plus DHA. Bragg’s listing says one softgel is enough, and the label serving is two. Igennus uses 1,344 mg of algal oil to deliver 600 mg of EPA plus DHA. Oil weight is not omega weight.

Some algae oils are DHA only, with no EPA at all. We left those out, because this page is about getting both.

How Much?

The U.S. hasn’t set an intake recommendation for EPA or DHA, according to the NIH fact sheet. EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority, set a daily intake of 250 mg of EPA plus DHA for adults. Every pick here clears that in one serving.

On the high end, the NIH fact sheet reports EFSA’s view that long-term EPA plus DHA supplements up to about 5 g a day appear safe, and FDA reached a similar 5 g conclusion. Our biggest serving is 1,000 mg.

The NIH notes omega-3 supplements can interact with some medications, warfarin being its example. On a blood thinner or any daily medication, or pregnant? Show the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist first. Captain Vegan only knows labels.

Softgels, Capsules and Carrageenan

Our four softgel picks use a plant starch shell (pea or corn) with glycerin, and all four list carrageenan in it. Shoppers ask about carrageenan a lot, so here’s the plain fact: Igennus, Bragg, NutraVege and Nordic contain it. Momentous uses a hypromellose capsule and doesn’t.

Softgels can also be made from gelatin, which is why we read the other-ingredients line on every bottle.

Clean Record Check

We checked FDA recall and warning-letter records, California Prop 65 notices and lawsuit trackers for every brand. None of these five products turned up in a recall, warning letter or Prop 65 notice. A few brands have notices or recalls on other products, which we don’t hold against these bottles. The one item touching a pick, a 2023 class action over Nordic Naturals’ dosage labels, is in its cons as an allegation.

Quick Questions

Is algae oil the same EPA and DHA as fish oil?

Same fatty acids. The NIH says the EPA and DHA in fish are made by microalgae in the first place. Algae oil just skips the fish. Amounts vary a lot by brand, so compare EPA plus DHA per serving.

Can’t I just eat flaxseed?

Flax, chia and walnuts give you ALA, and The Vegan Society suggests eating them daily. ALA converts to EPA and DHA only in small amounts (the NIH reports under 15%), which is why some vegans add algae oil on top. Plenty do both.

How many softgels should I take?

Whatever the label’s serving size says: two for four of our picks, one for NutraVege.

What is IAOS?

International Algae Omega Standards, Nutrasource’s certification program for algae omega-3 oils. Nutrasource lists certified products and their lots on its own site, which is where we checked Igennus.

Why isn’t Sports Research on the list?

Its Vegan Omega-3 wasn’t in the certifier database we checked, and its label wouldn’t load on the brand site. Its omega-3 with D3 has 5,000 IU of vitamin D per serving, above the 4,000 IU adult upper limit set out by the NIH, and its DHA 700 has no EPA.
