Best Vegan Vitamin D3 Supplements (2026): Lichen, Not Lanolin

By Captain Vegan · Updated November 5, 2026 · 5 picks compared

Most vitamin D3 comes from sheep’s wool. Not these. We checked every label for the D3 source and the capsule, looked up each certification in the certifier’s own database, and kept every dose under NIH’s upper limit.

How We Picked

  • Vegan source first: lichen or plant-based D3, or D2, with no lanolin, gelatin or fish. We checked the D3 source and the capsule on each label.
  • Independent testing: we searched NSF, NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Choice and Labdoor. A seal that isn’t in the certifier’s database doesn’t count.
  • Dose under NIH’s limit: nothing above 4,000 IU per serving, the adult upper limit, so the 5,000 IU bottles are out.
  • Cost per daily dose, from the Amazon price on the day we checked.
  • Clean record: FDA recalls and warning letters, California Prop 65 notices, lawsuits. Allegations are labeled as allegations.

The Reviews

Ranked, roasted, and label-checked.

#1
Momentous Vitamin D3 2,000 IU
Best overall

Momentous Vitamin D3 2,000 IU

The only pick here with a certification we found in the certifier’s own database: NSF lists it as Certified for Sport, product type Vegan. The D3 sits in organic extra virgin olive oil inside a plant capsule, with no sweeteners or flavors. It’s the priciest per daily dose on this page. That’s the cost of the paperwork.

  • Brand states vegan; hypromellose capsule; D3 labeled plant-based
  • NSF Certified for Sport

Why it made the list

  • NSF Certified for Sport, confirmed in NSF’s database
  • 2,000 IU, under NIH’s 4,000 IU adult upper limit
  • No sweeteners or flavors
  • Sold by Momentous

Watch out for

  • Most expensive per daily dose of our picks
  • Label says “plant-based cholecalciferol” but doesn’t name the source
  • Vegan is the brand’s own statement, not a vegan certification
  • Form: Capsule (hypromellose)
  • Per serving: 50 mcg (2,000 IU) vitamin D3 (as plant-based cholecalciferol)
  • Servings: 60
  • Other ingredients: Organic extra virgin olive oil, hypromellose (capsule), candelilla wax
  • Sweeteners & flavors: None

#2
Deva Vegan Vitamin D3 1000 IU
Best budget D3

Deva Vegan Vitamin D3 1000 IU

Lichen D3, a Vegan Society registration we confirmed in the Society’s own list, and the cheapest D3 per daily dose on this page. 1,000 IU sits between NIH’s adult recommendation and its upper limit. No sweeteners, no flavors, no fuss.

  • Vegan Society registered
  • No third-party certification found

Why it made the list

  • Lichen-derived D3, stated on the label
  • Vegan Society registered, confirmed in the Society’s list
  • Cheapest D3 per daily dose of our picks
  • No sweeteners or flavors

  • Form: Tablet
  • Per serving: 25 mcg (1,000 IU) vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) from lichen
  • Servings: 90
  • Other ingredients: Cellulose, vegetable stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, vegetable magnesium stearate, dicalcium phosphate, silica, hypromellose, vegetable glycerin

#3
Garden of Life mykind Organics Vegan D3 Spray (Vanilla)
Best spray

Garden of Life mykind Organics Vegan D3 Spray (Vanilla)

Pill-averse? One vanilla spray gives 1,000 IU of lichen D3 plus a plant oil blend. The label says refrigerate after opening and use within 90 days, so at one spray a day you won’t finish the bottle. The vegan seals on the bottle and the listing didn’t turn up in the databases we searched, so we don’t count them.

  • Brand states vegan; D3 from lichen; vegan seals not found in the certifiers’ databases
  • No third-party certification found

Why it made the list

  • Lichen D3 in a spray, no pill
  • 1,000 IU per spray
  • Sold by Amazon

Watch out for

  • Stevia and vanilla flavor
  • Use within 90 days of opening, so about 35 of 125 sprays go unused at one a day
  • The Vegan.org seal on the label, and the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society claims on Amazon, weren’t found in those databases
  • Brand note: a 2025 class action alleges lead in Garden of Life’s Organic Plant-Based Protein, a different product. Allegations only
  • Form: Liquid spray
  • Per serving: 25 mcg (1,000 IU) vitamin D3 from lichen per 0.46 mL spray, plus 410 mg organic omega-rich oil blend
  • Servings: 125 (label: use within 90 days of opening)
  • Other ingredients: Organic vanilla flavor, non-GMO vitamin E, organic sunflower lecithin, organic rosemary extract, stevia leaf extract
  • Sweeteners & flavors: Stevia leaf extract, organic vanilla flavor

#4
Doctors Best Vegan D3 2500 IU
Higher-dose pick

Doctor’s Best Vegan D3 2500 IU

The higher-dose option. 2,500 IU per capsule is well above NIH’s 600 to 800 IU adult recommendation, but still under its 4,000 IU upper limit. The D3 is Vitashine, which the label calls plant sourced, and it’s sold by Doctor’s Best itself.

  • Brand states vegan (vegan seal); plant-based capsule (modified cellulose)
  • No third-party certification found

Why it made the list

  • Under NIH’s 4,000 IU adult upper limit
  • Plant-sourced D3 in a veggie capsule
  • Sold by the brand

Watch out for

  • Well above NIH’s 600 to 800 IU adult recommendation
  • Sucrose and maltodextrin are among the other ingredients
  • Label says plant source but doesn’t name lichen
  • Form: Capsule (modified cellulose)
  • Per serving: 62.5 mcg (2,500 IU) vitamin D3 (Vitashine, plant-sourced cholecalciferol)
  • Servings: 60
  • Other ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, modified cellulose, maltodextrin, starch, sucrose, silicon dioxide, d-alpha-tocopherol, ascorbyl palmitate
  • Sweeteners & flavors: Sucrose listed among other ingredients; no flavors

#5
Amazon Elements Vitamin D2 2000 IU
Best D2 option

Amazon Elements Vitamin D2 2000 IU

Not D3, and we’re upfront about it. D2 is the other vegan form of vitamin D. NIH says both forms raise blood levels of vitamin D, though D3 raises them more and keeps them up longer. Want the cheapest vegan vitamin D per daily dose on this page? This is it.

  • Labeled vegan; vegetable capsule; D2 from cultured yeast
  • No third-party certification found

Why it made the list

  • Cheapest per daily dose of our picks
  • Sold by Amazon
  • No sweeteners or flavors

Watch out for

  • D2, not D3
  • Amazon’s listing warns heat or sunlight can damage the capsules in transit
  • Form: Capsule (vegetable)
  • Per serving: 50 mcg (2,000 IU) vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) from cultured yeast
  • Servings: 65
  • Other ingredients: Microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable capsule, organic rice hull concentrate, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide
  • Sweeteners & flavors: None

Why Most D3 Isn’t Vegan

Supplements use two forms of vitamin D, per NIH’s Office of Dietary Supplements: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). The Vegan Society notes that D2 isn’t derived from animals, while many D3 supplements use D3 from lanolin, the grease in sheep’s wool. Vegan D3 comes from lichen instead.

So “D3” on the front tells you nothing. Flip the bottle. Look for lichen, “plant-based” or “vegan” next to the D3, and a plant capsule or a tablet. Gelatin softgels are the usual trap.

Why vegans shop this aisle at all: NIH says fortified foods like milk and breakfast cereals provide most of the vitamin D in American diets, and it lists vegan diets among the situations where low vitamin D is more common.

D2 or D3?

Both are vitamin D, and both are vegan when the D3 comes from lichen or another plant-based source. NIH says both raise blood levels of vitamin D, but research shows D3 raises them more and keeps them up longer.

That’s why our top four are D3 and the D2 pick sits at number five. It’s still a fair choice if cheapest wins.

How Much?

NIH’s recommended amounts for adults are 600 to 800 IU (15 to 20 mcg) a day, depending on age. The upper limit for adults is 4,000 IU (100 mcg) a day. Every pick here is 2,500 IU or less per serving.

In the UK, The Vegan Society notes a 10 mcg daily reference intake and says UK health authorities recommend everyone take a vitamin D supplement from October to March at minimum.

Sun counts, but it’s fickle. NIH lists season, time of day, length of day, cloud cover and skin melanin among the things that change how much vitamin D your skin makes.

Label math: 1 mcg of vitamin D is 40 IU. So 25 mcg is 1,000 IU and 50 mcg is 2,000 IU. If a listing says 1,000 IU and 125 mcg in the same breath, trust the label.

Pregnant, or taking a statin, a steroid, a thiazide water pill or orlistat? NIH lists those medicines as possible vitamin D interactions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you add a supplement. The Captain reads labels; your pharmacist reads your whole list.

Quick Questions

Is all vitamin D3 vegan?

No. The Vegan Society says many D3 supplements use D3 from lanolin, which comes from sheep’s wool. Vegan D3 is made from lichen. Check the label for the source.

Which picks name lichen on the label?

Deva and Garden of Life both say lichen. Momentous says “plant-based cholecalciferol” and Doctor’s Best says plant sourced, but neither names the plant. All four state vegan.

Is D2 good enough?

It’s vegan, and NIH says it raises blood levels of vitamin D. NIH also says D3 raises them more and keeps them up longer, which is why our D2 pick ranks last.

Why no 5,000 IU picks?

NIH’s upper limit for adults is 4,000 IU a day. A 5,000 IU serving goes over it, so we left those bottles on the shelf.

Does a vegan seal on the bottle mean it’s certified?

Not always. Deva’s D3 is on The Vegan Society’s trademark list. Garden of Life’s spray shows a Vegan.org seal, and its Amazon listing mentions the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society, but we couldn’t find it in those databases, so we don’t count them.
